Basic Setup of PfSense

If you don’t have burner software than use this imgburn.

Getting Starting
From the Modem connect to your network port either on motherboard built in this will be WAN
From Switch or pc connect it to the other network port or PCI card this will be LAN
Boot up the computer and load the cd in tray following the basic.

Welcome to pfSense!
You going to leave it alone or press enter for default

Welcome to pfSense 2.0.3-Release
Press I to launch the installer

You Select environment uses the following console settings, shows in parentheses. Select any that you wish to change.
Accept those settings

Choose one of the following tasks to perform.
Quick/Easy install

Easy Install will automatically install without asking any questions etc and etc
If you wish to have more control your setup. Choose Custom installation from the main menu.


You may now wish to install a custom Kernel configuration.
Standard Kernel

This machine is about to be shutdown. Etc etc
Eject the disk

You be prompt again to Welcome to PfSense
Leave it alone

Here you will see your two network cards one will be RE0 and other is RL0 (Sometimes Xl0 depends)

Valid interfaces are: Example

Re0 00:00:00:00:00:00  (up) RealTek 10/100/1000Base TX (Use this for Lan)

Rl0 00:00:00:00:00:00  (up) RealTek 10/100Base TX (Use this for Wan)

Write it down example

Do you want to setup Vlans first?

If you are not going to use Vlan’s, or only for optional interface, You should say no here and use webConfigurator to configure Vlans later, if required do you want to set up Vlans now  [yin]?

Enter the WAN interface name or ‘a’ for auto-detection:

Enter the Lan interface name or ,a, four auto-detection
NOTE: this enables full Firewalling/NAT mode.
(or nothing if finished):


Enter the optional 1 interface name or ‘a’ for auto-detection  (or nothing if finished):
Press Enter

The interfaces will be assigned as follows:
WAN= Rl0
Lan= Re0

Do you want to proceed [yin]?

Once finish take you back to ***Welcome to pfSense

Enter an option:

Enter number of the interface you wish to configure:

Enter the new LAN IPV4 address. Press <ENTER> for none: Example
Press Enter

Enter the new LAN IPV4 subnet bit count:
You can pick 24 or 8. Later you can come back and change it.

Enter new LAN IPV6 address:

Do you want to enable the DHCP server on LAN? [yin]

Enter the start address of the client addresses range:

Enter the end address of client addresses range:

Do you want to revert to HTTP as the webconfigurator protocol?

The IPv4 LAN address has been set to

You can now access the webconfigurator by opening the following URL in your web brower :
Press <ENTER> to continue.

Now make sure your Wan connect to modem and Lan to switch or direct pc.
You can press 7 to ping example or if you get reply mean it working.

You going to need to connect to web interface. Go to pc that connect to the switch or Lan connect to direct to pc. May need to release new ip or restart pc.

Open up webroswer and type

Sense Login
Password: pfsense by default

This wizard will guide you through the initial configuration of pfSense.

Host name: Name it Pfsense
Domain: MyOffice
Primary DnS server: Blank
Secondary DNS Server: Blank

Select your time zone and click

On this screen we will configure the Wide Area Network information
Configure WAN interface: I set my to DHCP. Depends on your ISP. If ppoe than select it and enter your username and password.

Set Admin password for pfSense

Click reload pfsense new changes (Note this will take awhile)

If you see Congratulations pfSense is now configured: Test the internet if not
working you may need to restart pfsense and modem itself to sync.
